Today is World Sickle Cell Day

Today June 19, has been set aside for the celebration of World Sickle cell day. But really is there anything to celebrate? What does Sickle cell really mean to the rest of the World?

How many people, especially here in Nigeria know their genotypes? Even those who know their genotypes, how many really make a conscious effort to know more about genotype pairing for the sake of marriage and birthing children?

Even some of you educated and should know better, how many have created awareness of sickle cell disease just in their own corner of the world?

Currently Nigerian has the largest number of people living with sickle cell disease. And until we start making conscious effort to reduce this number through creating awareness we will still hold this unenviable title in years to come.
