It was a black Boxing Day in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, as hundreds of sympathisers wailed over the death of five persons involved in an accident on the Ilorin- Ogbomoso road.
The crash drew the attention of fun-seekers in the ancient town. Several people were said to have sustained injuries in the accident, which involved two vehicles.
The injured, it was gathered, had been taken to a nearby medical facility in Ogbomoso by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and policemen.
Other sympathisers were involved in the rescue mission.
It was learnt that the crash, which occurred at 3:47pm, was caused by overtaking by a driver of one of the Ilorin-bound vehicles.
An eyewitness, Mr. Ade Akanmu, said four persons died on the spot, while one of the victims died before getting to hospital.
He said: “It was a gory sight. Two vehicles were involved. One is a Mitsubishi Lancer marked OYO GBY 322AA and another car registered as OYO RUW 135 XA.
“The accident, which occurred at Ladokun in Surulere North Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Oyo State, happened when an Ilorin-bound passenger vehicle collided with another vehicle on the opposite side of the road.
“Five people – three men and two women -died on the spot. Several others were injured.
“We rescued the victims by cutting parts of the vehicles with an axe.”
The Nation learnt that one of the deceased was one Chief Alaaga.
It was gathered that he was returning from a meeting.
Contacted on the phone, FRSC state Commander Mrs. Uche Chukura said she was yet to receive any signal on the accident.
However, an FRSC official in Ogbomoso Zone, who confirmed the accident, said some men had been dispatched to the scene of the crash.
