Christmas tragedy: How drowned pastor’s wife reacted when hubby, two kids were dying

It is a tragic thing to lose loved ones but it is more tragic when such loss happens in multiples.

However, Pastor Bunmi Diya, wife of the Redeemed Christian Church of God Pastor at Open Heaven Paris in Charlton, United kingdom, Gabriel Diya, was said to be calm even when her 52-year-old husband and two children were dying.

Diya had taken his wife and three children Comfort; Praise-Emmanuel and the third child who is not named to the Club La Costa World holiday resort in Spain for the holidays.

However, while relaxing by the poolside, tragedy struck. Comfort aged nine, who was swimming began to struggle inside the pool. In a bid to save her life, the dad jumped inside the pool and Praise-Emmanuel aged 16 also jumped inside on a rescue mission but the three of them drowned eventually leaving the wife and the third child behind.

But while many women and even men would be weeping uncontrollably at such scene, Bunmi, the widow was reported to be calm unlike some who would have attempted to end their life at the magnitude of such tragedy.

Bunmi, according to a Spanish daily newspaper El Pais, kept praying for her three loved ones to be restored back to life while medics were carrying out cardiopulmonary resuscitation on them by the poolside.

The Mirror also quoted Josias Fletchman as saying, “Mr Diya’s wife, Olubunmi, prayed as CPR was performed on her husband and children at the resort, near the town of Fuengirola.

“The mum was praying for them to come back to life. She was calm. She was touching their bodies. She continued praying even after the ambulance people arrived and had stopped trying to revive them.”

Following the deaths, church members, friends and neighbours have paid tributes to the deceased pastor while urging prayers for the wife.

Some neighbours of the family said they were really devastated to learn of the deaths, describing the Diyas as very religious, very friendly, very humble.

“With heavy hearts, we extend our condolences to the family, parish, friends and associates of Area Pastor Gabriel Diya,” posted by Redeemed Christian Church of God, Central Office, UK.

Speaking outside her home in Charlton, South-East London, Lara Akins, 59, said, “I still can’t comprehend it; it’s still shocking. They are so nice, that is why everybody is shocked. We are very friendly with each other.”

As tribute keeps pouring for the pastor, his daughter, Comfort, has also been showered with tributes by her schoolmates and teachers.

Comfort was described by the head teacher of her primary school as “the most wonderfully kind, thoughtful, caring pupil” who was a “role model” for her peers.

Jo Marchant said, “Everyone at Windrush Charlton was devastated to hear about the tragic deaths of Comfort Diya, her father and brother on Christmas Eve.”

Ms Marchant said Comfort would be “greatly missed by the whole school community” and that support would be made available to pupils and parents.

Meanwhile, the Lead Bishop, West Africa, World Wide Anglican Church, Seun Adeoye, on Friday described the deaths of the pastor and his two children as tragic.

Bishop Adeoye, whose church is based in Osogbo, Osun State said this in an interview with one of Punch correspondents.

He called for prayers for clergies and their families saying such occurrence could not have been natural. But he condoled with the family of the dead to seek solace in God and be strong, especially in the trying moment.

Adeoye said, “It was said that three precious lives were lost just like that. It could not have been natural. Clergies and their families need prayers. People should always remember them.”

“ The family of the deceased should be strong in this trying moment and hold on to God. May God grant the deceased eternal rest.”

Also, Prophet Tosin Odeyemi of the Chosen Family Prophetic Ministry International ( Fayegbami) while also speaking in an interview with our correspondent described the incident as tragic.

Odeyemi said, “ My condolences to the family of the deceased pastor. He died alongside his two children leaving behind his wife and one child. It is a great tragedy but I pray God will comfort the wife and other family members.”
